approach-Rob-in-ActionLong before the photojournalistic style to wedding photography came into vogue, I had been shooting Hilton Head weddings with an eye for quietly capturing emotions and expressions as they unfold. As the staff photographer for the nationally circulated magazine, Hilton Head Monthly, I was able to sharpen my skills as both a photojournalist and a technical photographer. Shooting weddings on the weekend was a natural progression and a creative outlet to apply my skills and style.

After seven years with the magazine, I moved on and in 2003 founded Kaufman Photography. Although I have found tremendous success in the commercial and editorial fields of photography – creating advertising and marketing images for regional and national clients, as well as advertising agencies – I have never let go of one of the truly enjoyable aspects of being a professional photographer. Namely, providing ordinary folks with extraordinary images, and helping them to commemorate the special moments in their lives.

As you can see from my portfolio, I provide a mix of candid and posed, color and black and white, people and places. My belief is that wedding photos should be a reflection of how people actually remember the day: Sometimes the groom looks right at you with a beaming smile; sometimes you catch a glimpse of the bride as she takes in the sight of herself in a mirror; sometimes you witness a great grandmother holding an infant she’s never seen before. These are the memories that last in your mind, and they are the type of images I try to capture at every wedding I attend.
